Backpacking around Australia with ‘The Faultys’

Just as summer holidays in the UK are winding down, it is now time for me to start planning where I might go next, and I’ve always thought I’d like to fulfil the student dream of backpacking around Australia in the run-up to Christmas.

I’ve always wanted to see Fraser Island, the Great Barrier Reef and, of course, Sydney Opera House, one of most iconic performance venues of the southern hemisphere (and one of our top venues!).

So I need to make a decision – do I backpack, travel with an organised tour provider, or do I go for something more creative and unusual?

As it so happens Basil, Sybil and Manuel – the three stars of Faulty Towers The Dining Experience – are also embarking upon a tour of Australia – or should I say: yet another tour of Australia? I wonder what it would be like if I tagged along with them? I could become an official groupie!

If I did, I’d pass through 24 of the best locations Australia has to offer – and I thought for this blog I would share with you the ones I’m most excited about.

Just an 11 minute drive from Vue Grand hotel – one of our most frequent and most popular performance venues – you will find Basil’s Farm, Queenscliff. How ironic! Apparently, it is the perfect spot to indulge in fine wine, fresh air and abundant views, and the cheese platter and cauliflower soup come very highly recommended.

I’m a bit of a daredevil at heart and so the Ngilg Caves in Yallingup, WA sound right up my street. I can enjoy a guided tour of the caves to learn about hidden pathways and discover stunning formations caused by the water running within them. Conveniently, the caves are only a 13 minute walk from the Caves House Hotel which coincidently is where the show is performed on 22-23 November.

Chocolate lovers like me will love the vast array of chocolate on offer at the Carobana Chocolate Factory. It has everything from honeycomb to chili chocolate. It is in a beautiful historical building with many different rooms where you can watch demonstrations on how chocolate is made. The factory is only an eight minute drive from the Surf Club on Coffs Harbour, NSW, home to the Faultys on 11 November.

Yanchep National Park is a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of Perth, WA. If we got get there early in the morning or late in the evening I might be able to see kangaroos in their natural habitat. That would be one to tick off the bucket list. The National Park is a nine minute drive from Yanchep Inn, where the show is performed on 27 November.

So if you like planning your summer in Australia with a backpack, why not join me in planning your tour to coincide with Basil, Sybil and Manuel’s? Even if you can’t make all 24 locations, I hope to see you at one or two. Of course you could always tell your friends to join me at the locations you can’t make… 😉
