The architecture of Sydney Opera House may be one of the most striking designs of the 20th century; it’s a perfect example of modern expressionist design. You could say that Basil and Sybil Faulty are ‘striking’, too, in one way or another… he most certainly makes his thoughts and feelings known, and she loves to stretch her vocal chords! Well, they’re bouncing back to this iconic venue for five performances 21-25 March 2018.
It’s been 21 years since our first Faulty Towers The Dining Experience, and six years since our first show in Sydney Opera House. This year we’re back in the beautiful Utzon Room, which has been home to the Faulty restaurant every time! You would think that Basil, Sybil & Manuel know their way around the premises by now, but I wouldn’t be so sure… The room is named after the architect, Jørn Utzon, who infamously resigned from the Sydney Opera House project mid-build with the UK’s Guardian newspaper noting in his obituary: ‘for an architect there can be no fate worse than seeing a project that should have been the crowning achievement of his career taken away from him by what he saw as a cabal of uncomprehending philistines’.
Coincidentally, the year in which we were privileged to debut at Sydney Opera House, we also visited another of Utzon’s designs: the Musikhuset Esbjerg in Denmark! That was back in 2013, on one of our near-constant European tours – and we have continued to stun audiences in Europe and Sydney ever since. In 2013 The Australian Traveller reviewed the show as ‘a hilarious battle of wits, patience, fire extinguishers and fine food‘, and The Holiday & Travel Magazine agreed by noting the ‘outstanding performances‘. Things only improved in 2014 when The Great Aussie Bite entitled their review ‘laugh till you cry through two riotous hours of food, wine and impeccable comic timing’, and further in 2016 when Limelight Magazine – the Australian arts and music heavyweight – gave us a whopping five stars and proclaimed ‘nothing faulty about this evening of superb food and comedy‘!
This year we are also pleased to announce that we shall be fundraising for Clown Doctors at our Sydney Opera House performances, as well as other selected shows around Australia; we’ll announce running totals as we go. Clown Doctors are professional performers who use their skills to help children during their time in hospital (you can read all about it in our blog here). Our original Manuel, Andy Foreman, is himself a Clown Doctor, going under the name of ‘Dr 2 Shoes’! Previous attendees of our shows in Sydney may have noticed him at the Opera House in 2013 and 2016 when he won 5-star reviews. There’s good news for all as he returns again this year – we must just make sure he brings the right outfit… Joining Andy are Luke McGibney and Rhiân McLean, who are making their Sydney debuts having gained success with audiences and critics alike on London’s West End and, most recently, Fringe World Perth.
