As the BBC Children in Need Appeal show kicked off on BBC One on 15 November, so teams of actors in Faulty Towers The Dining Experience were opening the doors on performances around the country and fundraising for the BBC’s flagship charity for the final time this year.
The 2019 campaign started in our traditional style back in August with Basil, Sybil and Manuel shaking buckets after performances at our London residency and at our Edinburgh Festival Fringe venue. Those collections continued in Edinburgh after every Fringe performance (twice a day throughout August) and in London after every performance until November (that’s six times a week, every week).
Our involvement with this amazing charity began in Edinburgh in 2009, when we raffled a gnome during what was then our second visit to the world’s largest arts festival. That year we were able to hand Pudsey £1000 in person at BBC Manchester; since then we have built up our collections schedule to include every performance at our London residency and also selected touring performances.
Thanks to the incredible support of Intercontinental Edinburgh The George, the Faultys had more guests through the doors in Edinburgh than ever before during the Fringe, meaning that in the Scottish capital alone our donations increased from £1000 in 2009 to just shy of £6000 in 2019!
All in all this year we were able to donate a whopping £19,388.15!
And we really couldn’t do it without the unwavering support of our venues, the dedication of our actors for facilitating collections, and, of course, the incredible generosity of our audiences.
For their help this year, we’d like specifically to thank staff, audiences and performers at Radisson Blu Edwardian Bloomsbury Street, Intercontinental Edinburgh The George, Hadley Park House Telford, The Athenaeum Bury, Villiers Hotel Buckingham, and Ardington Hotel Worthing.
As our total donations now exceed £120,000 – £120,573.87 to be precise – just watch this space for our next campaign in 2020…!
